Race Classes

Solo Male - Men only. Must be at least 18 years old.
Solo Female - Women only. Must be at least 18 years old.
Duo: - 2 men, 2 women, or one of each. Can be of any age over 12 Years.
Four-Person: - Four men, four women, or any combination thereof. Can be of any age over 12 years old.
6-hour Solo: - Men or women. 6-hour solos will start with the rest of the field and will end at 4:00 PM. Must be at least 18 years old.


The Start

The Night Train uses a Le-Mans style start. Starting racers must have their bikes in the area specified during the rider's meeting. The racers must run to their bikes from the designated starting line.


Team Captains

Each team entry must have a team captain. Team captains will represent the team in all official correspondence and communications before, during, and after the event. Only team captains may file protests. Solo riders are considered team captains.


Pre Race Meeting

Everyone is welcome to attend the race meeting, however, the team captain or their designated representative must come and are responsible for relaying all information to their team.


Volunteers

Volunteers are encouraged but are not required. All volunteers providing at least four hours of service will earn an event t-shirt or pint glass as well as a bag of samples from our event sponsors. Those wishing to volunteer should contact us before the event if possible. You can also volunteer at the event information booth during the event.


Helmets

You must wear a helmet at all times when you are on the course. Anyone caught not wearing a helmet will be disqualified.


Help on Your Lap

Help on your lap may only be by other registered racers and they can only be on foot or on a bike. They must also be going in the direction that the race is being run. You cannot short cut the course. Help maybe provided by any racer on any team to any racer on any team.


Food and Water

You may take food and water from anyone, anywhere on the course as long as you do not impede any other racers.


Right of the Trail

If you are pushing your bike you must give right of way to racers riding their bikes. Racers who are pushing or carrying their bikes can overtake a racer riding their bike as long as they do not interfere with the racer riding their bike.


Racing for Position

Due to the difficulty of determining a racers category on the course you may always assume you are racing against any rider on the course. However, you may never physically or otherwise keep a faster racer from passing you.


Cutting the Course

Any racer caught cutting the course will be disqualified along with their entire team.


Sportsmanship

Any unsportsmanlike behavior will result in disqualification. The race director will make the final decision as to what is unsportsmanlike and the decision cannot be protested.


Protests

Only the team captain may lodge a protest. Protests can only be in writing and can be given to the race director any time up to the posting of the final results. A $75 fee will be required with the protest. The race director will promptly rule on the protest. The fee will be forfeited to the race director if the protest is denied or refunded if the protest is upheld.


Final Rulings

The race director has the final say, period.


Lighting

Racers must have a light source with a minimum rated power of 10 watts. They must also have one of the following: a red rear reflector or a battery-operated red light. The light or reflector can be mounted to the bike or attached to the rider in such a way that someone approaching from the rear of the rider can plainly see the light/reflector. (Battery chargers can be plugged in at the neutral charging station). Teams should label their batteries and chargers with the team name. The neutral charging station and any other charging station is unsecured. Neither The Night Train, Rusty Sprocket Productions LLC, nor any affiliates will be responsible for any missing equipment.


Lights Installed

You must have your lights installed and ready to use one hour before sundown. Being on the course without proper lighting is dangerous and is grounds for disqualification.


Timing

Each team will be issued one baton to be carried by the participant on their lap. As a rider enters the transition area, they must show the baton to the timekeeper in order for the lap to count. It is the responsibility of the rider coming in to make sure their time was captured.


Transition

The transition from one rider to the next or from one consecutive lap to the next will always be done at the transition area located just beyond the start/finish line. After crossing the start/finish line and showing your team baton, you are free to either continue on another lap or pass the baton to the next rider. The finish time of each lap becomes the starting time of the next lap. The time keeper will not identify which rider on the team completes each lap. Instead, it is the team's responsibility to keep up with the team member's name that did each lap.


Loss of Baton Penalty

Loss of a baton will result in a time penalty equivalent to the amount of time it takes to prepare a new baton with the team's information. If all batons are not returned at the end of the race then that team will not receive a time for the last lap and will be DNF.


Time and Position

It is the team's responsibility to verify that each lap was captured and that the lap times are correct. For instance if one lap time is double what it should be then it is possible a rider didn't have his time recorded when they passed over the mat. The times will be posted more or less on an hourly basis. If you think there has been a problem you should promptly contact the race director or timing representative.


Lap Requirements

Each rider must complete at least one lap.


The Finish

The Night Train starts at 10:00 AM and ends at 10:00 PM. Teams or solo racers may opt to quit racing at any time as long as the minimum number of laps has been completed. You must announce your intention to quit to the timekeeper who will mark you "OUT" of the race. Once you are marked out, you may not resume racing.

The cutoff time will be announced just prior to the event and is subject to change. If the cutoff time is changed for any reason, the updated time will be posted at the timing booth and at the bulletin board.

A team's final placing will be determined by the number of laps completed and the order of finish. For example, a team that has completed 20 laps, with a finish time of 10:34 PM would beat a team that completed 20 laps with a time of 10:40 PM. A team with 21 laps completed and a finish time of 11:00 PM would beat them both.


Uncontrollable Circumstances

In the case of any uncontrollable circumstances such as weather (or any other extenuating factor that prevents the continuation of the event), the race director may call the race. The final results will be based on each team's placement at the call time as determined by that team's last completed lap. This rule will only be exercised as a last resort only when the potential for serious harm or loss of life becomes likely.


Good Samaritan Rule

If you stop to help a seriously injured fellow racer which requires an EMS response, the Good Samaritan rule will come into effect. When EMS takes charge of the situation and you cross the finish line, a calculation will be made based on the average lap times of each team member on your team. In other words, we will take the average lap time of each member on your team and divide it by the total number of members on your team. This will then be your lap time for that lap.
